November 12: More on proto-crawling

For a long time I was convinced Carter was going to go right to walking, but now I'm think he's going to crawl after all. He's starting to roll around a bit to get to toys, and I have seen him roll onto his tummy and stay there many times in the last couple of days. It's amazing, because he has always hated being on his tummy.

Now he'll roll over and actually start pushing up a bit. He will straighten his legs completely and get himself into a push-up position, and then he'll get his knees under him. He's not far away from doing that rocking movement. Oy. We may have to look into some baby gates soon...

All of this hard work on crawling and moving around has made him very distracted, and it's hard to get him to nurse for more than a couple of minutes at a time. If I offer, he will almost always nurse, but a couple of minutes later the cat will walk by, or some toy will catch his eye, and he's done. He's been waking up to nurse a lot at night, and it's not just comfort nursing -- he's actually eating. So he's basically trying to make up for it at night. I'm going to try to offer the breast much more frequently during the day for a while to see if that helps. Lots of little meals, instead of lots of overnight snacking. :-)

But he's definitely not starving. I weighed him last night before his bath, and he was 20.2 pounds, about 20 pounds, 3 ounces! That's a jump of a half a pound in the last week, after staying around 19.5 pounds for a few weeks. I can't believe he's over 20 pounds. It's just so crazy to think about how tiny he was, and what a big boy he is now. He's still pretty short, though. I need to measure his length to see, but he's definitely heavy for his size.
