Playing, eating, and generally moving around

First, check out this picture of Carter standing at the back door. Doesn't he look like he's ready to get going? He's really enjoying his new mobility!

On Friday afternoon we went to one of those indoor playgrounds. I wasn't sure if there would be anything Carter could play on, but I thought I'd check it out. It turned out they had a toddler area that was sparse but interesting. Carter observed at first, and when he was ready started exploring. The first thing he went after was a truck:

He made a beeline for it! He doesn't have any toy cars yet, but maybe we'll have to get him one. He is really interested in wheels these days, and turned the truck on its side and spun the wheels for a while.

In this video, you can see him crawling around and exploring. When he noticed the camera, he smiled and waved, totally unprompted!

He soon ventured out of the baby area. He was charming and smiley for some other moms, and then tried to make friends with a baby who wanted nothing to do with him.

There was an inflatable thing just for toddlers, and I put him in it and let him crawl around. He seemed weirded out by it at first. He didn't quite know what to think about how squishy the surface was.

But he warmed up to it later on and crawled around for a while.

There are lots of those places around, so I think we'll continue to check them out. He seemed to enjoy it!

Doug is out of town until Wednesday, and Carter's nanny is going to the Inauguration, so it's just going to be me and Carter for a few days. We haven't spent this much time alone together for a while, so it will be interesting. The last time Doug was away, Carter wasn't yet mobile!

Carter has really started to eat in the last few weeks. Until now he mostly just played with food, but now he really eats it. A lot of what he eats goes straight through and is completely identifiable in his diaper! (I'm really getting a lot of use out of the diaper sprayer.) He will try anything we put in front of him, though he definitely has some favorites that he'll go for first. He LOVES grapes, and will eat as many as we can give him. He also really likes steamed baby carrots. They're a good size for him to hold and easy for him to bite pieces off of. He likes pasta too, with just about any kind of sauce. I've been having scrambled eggs in the mornings this week, and much to Doug's dismay, Carter really likes them. I've also been on a tangerine kick lately, and Carter really likes eating a few sections. He watches me peel the tangerine with great fascination!

We've started giving him toddler flatware at meals, and he just plays with those mostly. We'll stab some food on a fork and give it to him, but he pulls it off the fork and eats it with his hands anyway, LOL. We assume he'll figure it out eventually. Here is a picture of him checking out his fork the other day:

He still nurses a lot, and I don't worry about whether or not he's just nursed before a meal. At this point, I still consider him mostly breastfed, with eating food just being a supplement to that. He eats whenever we eat, and then nurses on demand, and that's the way we'll keep it for a while. :-)
