November 16: Supporting marriage equality; pulling up

Carter seems like he's starting to try to pull up a little. If he's sitting, he will shift his weight forward and grab onto things, and then get on his knees. It seems like it's just a matter of time before he has the upper body strength to pull himself up. :-P Here's a picture to show you what I mean:

He then sat there and chewed on his toy box for a while:

When I put him on the floor now, he doesn't necessarily stay put. If I put him on his back or his tummy, he'll roll around to get to his toys, or will try to scoot himself forward or backward. If I put him down sitting, he'll sometimes get onto his tummy, or he'll get on his knees like in the picture above. I'm already having to look around before putting him down to make sure there's nothing he dangerous within a 6 foot radius. Crazy!

Yesterday afternoon, we went down to City Hall for the Join the Impact rally, a nationwide rally for marriage equality. It was awesome! There were 3000 people there at City Hall, and it was such an amazing feeling to be in that crowd. And it wasn't just gay folk, either -- lots of straight families were there, many of whom said they wanted their children to see the fight for civil rights in action. Cars were driving by and honking like crazy, with people hanging out the windows and shouting their support. There wasn't a single protester that I saw.

I left feeling very positive about the future. I really, truly believe it's only a matter of time before we have marriage equality. It may not come as soon as we want, but it's coming. It's a cause I feel intensely passionate about, for reasons that are hard to explain. But one reason is that I want Carter to grow up in a world where there are no unfair boundaries placed on people, for any reason. I want the next generation of GLBT people to have the same opportunities I had for love, marriage, and family. Those things are so, so important. :-)

Here are some pictures:

Carter had a blast. He loves being in crowds of people, and he was smiling at everyone. Lots of people stopped to tell me how cute he is! We ran into some people I know from work, who have a 5-year-old and a 6-month-old, and hung out with them for a while. Carter was really interested in playing with their baby! He's started to notice other children lately, and it's so cute. It will be fun to see him with all of his cousins at Thanksgiving!
