NaBloPoMo 20/30: Christmas tree

We're heading to Orlando next weekend and then Doug will be traveling a lot in the first few weeks of December, so we decided to go ahead and put up the Christmas tree today. It can be a little bit of a challenge to get in the Christmas spirit when it's 80 degrees, so we headed to The Domain for lunch to see the big Christmas tree they put up there every year.

After that we went home and got the Christmas tree out. This is the tenth year we've put up this big tree, and for the first time ever we couldn't get some of the branches to light. It's been a great tree, but maybe next year we'll finally get a new one. I also decided to put it in the music room for the first time. We usually put it in the foyer, but I wanted to do something different this year. I wanted the tree in a spot where we could could sit around it and listen to music and hang out without the TV on. I also wanted to have it visible through the front windows, which it isn't when it's in the foyer.

We took our time with it, and decorated it after dinner while listening to Christmas music. Then Carter got an early Christmas present: a Christmas train set! I got it on clearance last year and have had it in a closet for months. I wanted him to have a special toy to play with by the Christmas tree. He loved it, of course. It's really cute! It's the GeoTrax Christmas train, if you're familiar with that brand.

After the tree was decorated, Doug opened a bottle of wine and we sat by the tree and talked and listened to music and it was just what I'd hoped for: a beautiful family night with no TV, no phones, and no computers. ;-)

Our tree is decorated with ornaments we've collected over the years, many from our travels, others gifts from people in our lives. There is a story behind every single ornament on the tree, and so decorating it is a chance to tell stories and remember things from our more than 20 years together. For me, Christmas is a celebration of family and friends, a time for celebrating the beautiful things in your life. I feel like we got a good start tonight. :-)
