As I write this, Carter is sitting on the foot of the stairs, waving two socks around in the air and singing a song. He's been singing more and more lately, and it's really cute. He sings the cleanup song he learned at Gymboree, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, the theme song from Yo Gabba Gabba, and even the ABC song. He likes it when we sit on the floor together and play musical instruments, and when we play familiar songs, he'll get really excited. He has pretty good rhythm at this point, and can clap or drum along in time with the music.
I taught myself a little piano as a child, but always regretted that I never learned to play an instrument. I'm hoping we'll be able to get Carter to learn an instrument early on. We've talked about it a bit, and we both think piano might be a good place to start. You learn music theory and how to read music when you play the piano, and that is a great foundation for everything else.
Piano lessons are way off in the future, but in the meantime, Carter seems to like the music class he takes at Gymboree. I'm really glad we enrolled him in it, because he's actually learned quite a lot. They mostly play with different kinds of percussion instruments, and the teacher sings songs and shows them how to keep the beat. They do the songs at different tempos, and they use the instruments in lot of different ways. At the end of the lesson, the teacher pours a huge box of instruments in the middle of the floor, and the kids pick them up and explore them for a while. The teacher is awesome, a tattooed local rocker who is completely awesome with kids. His band does family friendly shows every now and then, and I want to go to one soon. I think Carter would really like it!
The writing of this post was interrupted by a request to sing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, heh.
