Eye exam!

Carter had an eye exam this morning, and the results were very positive. At his last exam in Greensboro, he had developed stage 2 Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP) in both eyes. As I think I explained on the CarePage, this often resolves itself, but if it progresses to stage 3 or beyond surgery can be needed to save the baby's eyesight. The doctor who examined Carter today said that his condition had regressed to stage 1 (which is better), with just a bit of stage 2 on the side of his left eye. Even if that got worse, it wouldn't really affect his eyesight much. So it looks like he's getting better! That's such a huge relief. I was prepared for him to need glasses as a toddler or even surgery (though I didn't expect it), so I'm glad I don't have to worry about that now.

I weighed him today without clothes on and his weight was 5 pounds 4.7 ounces. He's still gaining about an ounce a day, which is good. He already looks so big to me! He's only 10 days from his due date now, which is also hard to believe. If all of this hadn't happened, I would probably be waddling around the house now, miserable and hoping he'd come soon. I'd be practicing my hypnobirthing techniques, and gearing myself up for labor. And he would still be inside me, and wouldn't have gone through any of this, the good and the bad. It's so weird to think about it all, and I can't help but wonder how this will ultimately affect him.

Here are two pictures that show his growth in the last month. The first picture was taken February 14, and the second was taken yesterday. He's wearing the same sleeper in both pictures.

I don't know how obvious it is, since this sleeper is sort of baggy to begin with, heh. But he certainly looks a lot chubbier in the second picture.

We have an appointment with a photographer in the morning, so I'll report on that tomorrow.

There is clearly a difference in those pics and he is such a handsome little boy. I'm glad to hear that his eye test provided such great results. It's hard, I'm sure to have all these things outstanding as you look forward to what would have been the due date.

You are an amazing person and Carter is so lucky to have you for his mum.
